The story of this print
Shōno is the storm to Kanbara’s snow, and the two prints are the peaks of the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō. A squall has hit the hill road outside the forty-fifth post town: two porters run uphill with a covered palanquin, its passenger invisible; a man with a paper umbrella and another in a straw cape hurry the other way; a grove of bamboo bends almost flat in the wind; and the rain falls in two systems of slanting lines across a sky that grades from grey to black. The whole picture leans into the weather.
Hiroshige printed the two figures at the top of the road so that the umbrella carries the publisher’s name and the year — a joke and an advertisement at once. The Library of Congress impression is from the original Hōeidō blocks, with the black gradation at the top of the sheet intact; restored from the archive’s scan without redrawing.

Restoration notes
Restoration: trimmed the mount and scanner margins, balanced levels while keeping the paper tone and the flat colour blocks of the woodblock impression (85% of the original colour retained), removed dust and specks, applied gentle sharpening. Toning, wormholes, the printer's registration and the collector's seals are kept where they belong to the object; nothing is redrawn.
Every print carries its archive credit on the packing slip. Paper tone and small imperfections of the original are kept on purpose; nothing is redrawn.
