Antique Map of Ohio 1831 — Framed State Map Print

The story of this map

By 1831 Ohio had been a state for less than thirty years and was already one of the most populous in the Union, and Cincinnati, where this map was published, was its booming river city. Engraved by William Woodruff and issued by the Guilford brothers, it was made from actual survey and printed as a large wall map for courthouses, land offices and the parlours of people who had just bought a farm.

It is a big, generous sheet. The counties are washed in hand colour, the township grid laid down by the federal surveys covers the state in a fine lattice, and the rivers, the Ohio along the south and Lake Erie along the north, frame it all. The towns are named with the confidence of a place that expected to grow, and the whole map has the clean, orderly look that makes early Midwestern maps so pleasing on a wall.

It suits an Ohio farmhouse, a Cincinnati or Columbus office, a Cleveland loft, or anyone whose people came west on the National Road. Its near-square proportions make it a natural for our square frames. It belongs to our Antique Maps of US States collection and pairs well with the 1826 map of Michigan Territory.

Restoration notes

Restoration plan: crop scan margins, balance colour cast and levels while keeping the paper tone, remove library stamps and scanner artefacts if present, gentle sharpening. No repainting of original content.

Every print carries its archive credit on the packing slip. Paper tone and small imperfections of the original are kept on purpose; nothing is redrawn.

Is this an original antique map?

No. It is a new archival print of a restored high-resolution scan of the 1831 map held by the Boston Public Library's Leventhal Map & Education Center. We never sell originals.

What is actually printed on this map?

The State of Ohio from actual survey: the counties in hand colour, the survey townships, rivers, Lake Erie along the top, and the towns and roads of a state that was filling up fast in the 1830s.

How big is the map on the sheet?

The original is a large, nearly square wall map of about 122 x 111 cm on a 130 x 120 cm sheet (51 x 47 in). Our prints run from 12 x 16 in to 24 x 32 in and include square 20 x 20 and 24 x 24 options that fit it well.

Does it come framed?

Choose it. Every map comes as an archival matte paper print, a stretched canvas, or framed in black, white or natural oak. Framed prints are made and framed in the country of delivery, ready to hang.

Colours vary between screens and paper. The tone you see here is a close match to the archival matte print; framed prints have no glass glare in these previews.
