Long Horizontal Wall Art

A long horizontal wall is the hardest shape to fill, because almost nothing is made for it — most art is square or upright, so you end up with two dead gaps and a piece that looks lost. Antique maps have the opposite problem: coastlines, harbour surveys and bird's-eye city views were drawn wide because their subjects are. Every piece here is at least 1.4 times as wide as it is tall.

49 pieces · from $35 on paper, $95 framed · largest 48×32 in · every size printed at 200 dpi or better from the archive's own scan

Why these fit

The shape the wall actually needs

Wide because the subject is wide

A harbour chart, a river survey, a bird’s-eye view of a city along a shoreline — these were drawn wide in the 1700s and 1800s for the same reason your wall is wide now. Nothing has been cropped to fake the shape.

Sized to the sofa, not to a frame catalogue

The room visualiser draws an 84 in sofa, a 60 in desk and an 80 in door to scale, so you can see whether a 24×36 or a 32×48 is the one that actually fills the wall before you buy.

Up to 48 in across

The widest sheets are offered at 24×48 and 12×36. Each size is only listed when the scan carries 200 dpi at that width — no upscales, no soft edges.

Questions

What counts as long horizontal wall art?

Anything meaningfully wider than it is tall — here, at least 1.4 times as wide. That is the shape that suits the space above a sofa, a headboard, a mantel or a console table, where a square piece leaves awkward gaps at each end.

Why are antique maps this shape?

Because the world is. Coastlines, harbour charts, river surveys and bird’s-eye city views were drawn wide because their subjects are wide. That makes them the natural answer to a long horizontal wall, which most contemporary art — usually square or portrait — is not.

How wide do they go?

Up to 48 in on the long edge, and the very long panoramic sheets are offered at 12×36 and 24×48. Use the size guide, or the room visualiser on any product page, to see the piece drawn to scale against an 84 in sofa.

Can I see it on my own wall first?

Yes. Every product page has a wall visualiser: five room scenes drawn to scale with a 5 ft 6 in figure for reference, or you can upload a photo of your own wall. The photo stays in your browser and is never uploaded to us.

Framed or unframed?

Both. Solid wood in black, natural oak or white with an acrylic front and hardware fitted, or rolled on archival matte paper, or stretched canvas.
