The story of this map

Currier & Ives published this view of Chicago in 1892, twenty-one years after the Great Fire and one year before the World’s Columbian Exposition opened. The city had rebuilt itself in stone and steel at a speed that astonished visitors, and this sheet was made to show it off. Our restored print is made from the coloured lithograph in the Library of Congress.

The view is from high over Lake Michigan looking west, so the lakefront and harbour, busy with steamers and lake schooners, fill the bottom of the sheet. The Chicago River and its two branches cut through the grid, crossed by bridge after bridge, and the downtown blocks are drawn with the density of a city that had just invented the skyscraper. Beyond, the streets run in ruler-straight lines to the edge of the prairie. Currier & Ives gave everything a soft, sunny colouring that reads well from across a room.

This is a print for a Chicago living room, a River North loft or an office that wants to show a little civic pride. It belongs to our American Cities collection and pairs naturally with the 1889 view of Detroit, or with the Lake Michigan chart from our Nautical Charts collection for a Great Lakes wall.

Sizes are the print size. Framed prints add about 1 in on each side. Sizes marked “aged-paper margin” keep the whole map and float it on a toned margin — nothing is cropped.
