The story of this map

This map of the Hawaiian Islands was published in Philadelphia in 1893, the year the Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown and the islands suddenly became front-page news in the United States. Compiled by R. H. Davis and S. B. Linton and printed by Burk & McFetridge, it was made to satisfy that curiosity: a map of all the islands, with the facts a mainland reader wanted alongside it.

The archipelago runs across the sheet from Kauai to the big island of Hawaii, with the mountains and volcanoes shaded in relief and the coasts, harbours and districts named. An inset shows Oahu and Honolulu at larger scale, a small locator map sets the islands in the wide Pacific, and around the edges are panels of statistics and a short vocabulary of Hawaiian words, which is the detail everyone ends up reading first.

It is a warm, informative sheet that looks right in a beach house, a surf shack, a Honolulu office or the home of anyone who has ever flown home from the islands wishing they had not. It belongs to our Antique Maps of US States collection, as the westernmost piece on the wall.

Restoration notes

Restoration plan: crop scan margins, balance colour cast and levels while keeping the paper tone, remove library stamps and scanner artefacts if present, gentle sharpening. No repainting of original content.

Every print carries its archive credit on the packing slip. Paper tone and small imperfections of the original are kept on purpose; nothing is redrawn.

Is this an original antique map?

No. It is a new archival print of a restored high-resolution scan of the 1893 map held by the Library of Congress. We never sell originals.

What is actually printed on this map?

The whole Hawaiian archipelago from Kauai to Hawaii with relief and place names, an inset of Oahu, a small map placing the islands in the Pacific, and panels of text with statistics and a short vocabulary of Hawaiian words.

How big is the map on the sheet?

The original sheet is about 39 x 61 cm (15 x 24 in), landscape. Our prints run from 12 x 18 in to 24 x 36 in, and the full sheet including the text panels fits every size.

Does it come framed?

Choose it. Every map comes as an archival matte paper print, a stretched canvas, or framed in black, white or natural oak. Framed prints are made and framed in the country of delivery, ready to hang.

Colours vary between screens and paper. The tone you see here is a close match to the archival matte print; framed prints have no glass glare in these previews.
