Vintage Milwaukee Map 1879 — Bird's-Eye View, Framed Print

The story of this map

Milwaukee in 1879 was a lake port of breweries and grain elevators, and the view J. J. Stoner published that year — drawn for him by the Beck & Pauli shop that worked on so many of these sheets — shows it from over the lake: the harbour piers, the three rivers threading through the city with their swing bridges, the elevators along the Menomonee, the brewery chimneys, and the streets drawn house by house to the farmland at the edges.

Stoner’s views were sold to the businesses shown in them and are now the record of the city in its German-immigrant heyday. The Library of Congress scan is over 12,000 pixels wide; restored from it, keeping the paper tone.

Restoration notes

Restoration: cropped the scanner bed and mount margins, corrected levels and colour cast while keeping the paper tone, removed dust and specks, applied gentle sharpening. Fold lines, stains and period annotations are kept where they belong to the object; nothing is redrawn.

What does the map show?

Milwaukee from above Lake Michigan in 1879: the harbour entrance and the piers, the Milwaukee, Menomonee and Kinnickinnic rivers threading the city, the grain elevators and breweries, and the streets drawn house by house to the edge of the farmland.

Is this an original antique map?

No. It is a new archival print made from a restored high-resolution scan of the original held by the Library of Congress, Geography and Map Division. We never sell originals; the archive record and its rights statement are on this page.

Does it come framed?

Yes, if you choose a framed option: a black, white or natural oak wood frame, ready to hang, made in the country of delivery. Unframed archival matte paper and stretched canvas are also available at the larger sizes.

Colours vary between screens and paper. The tone you see here is a close match to the archival matte print; framed prints have no glass glare in these previews.
