The story of this map

Charleston’s harbor is where the Civil War began, and this is the chart of it from those years. The US Coast Survey first published its preliminary chart of Charleston Harbor and its approaches in 1858; the Library of Congress copy is the printing with additions made in 1862, when the harbor was under blockade and every sounding on the bar mattered to both sides.

It is an unusually handsome sheet. The harbor opens like a fan from the city at the tip of its peninsula, between the Ashley and Cooper rivers, out past the forts to the bar, and the whole approach is filled with sounding figures and channel lines. Two engraved views are set on the sheet, the coast as seen from a ship standing in. The nearly square format sits particularly well in a square frame.

The Library’s copy also carries a small ink note recording its transfer to the Engineer Department in 1866 — a reminder that this was a working document, handed from one office to the next.

It belongs in a Charleston or Lowcountry home, a history-minded study, or beside our 1872 bird’s-eye view of the city. Part of our Framed Nautical Charts collection. Printed to order on archival matte paper and framed in the country of delivery.

Restoration notes

Restoration plan: the Library of Congress copy carries a later ink inscription (an 1866 Engineer Department transfer note) — keep it if it sits within the chart image, crop it with the margin if it sits outside; then crop scan margins, balance colour cast and levels while keeping the paper tone, remove library stamps and scanner artefacts if present, gentle sharpening. No repainting of original content.

Every print carries its archive credit on the packing slip. Paper tone and small imperfections of the original are kept on purpose; nothing is redrawn.

Sizes are the print size. Framed prints add about 1 in on each side. Sizes marked “aged-paper margin” keep the whole map and float it on a toned margin — nothing is cropped.
