The story of this map

The Bright Angel sheet is one of the most admired topographic maps the US Geological Survey ever produced. Surveyed in the first years of the twentieth century and published in 1903, it tackles the hardest terrain in America: the Grand Canyon, where a mile of vertical relief has to be drawn in contour lines on a flat sheet.

The result is almost abstract. Contours stack into dense brown bands along every cliff face, then spread across the plateaus of the rims, so the whole canyon reads like a fingerprint pressed into the paper. The Colorado River threads through the middle in blue, with Bright Angel Creek cutting down from the north. Look closely and you can trace the ledges and side canyons that hikers still descend today.

The map predates the national park by sixteen years. When it was drawn the canyon was still largely the preserve of prospectors, surveyors and a few pioneering tourist outfits, which is part of what gives the sheet its exploratory feel.

We print it as a restored reproduction in our Framed Topographic Maps collection. It works beautifully in a den, a hallway, or beside other Southwestern prints, and it is a natural gift for anyone who has walked the Bright Angel Trail. Printed to order on archival matte paper and framed in the country of delivery.

Restoration notes

Restoration plan: crop scan margins, balance colour cast and levels while keeping the paper tone, remove library stamps and scanner artefacts if present, gentle sharpening. No repainting of original content.

Sizes are the print size. Framed prints add about 1 in on each side. Sizes marked “aged-paper margin” keep the whole map and float it on a toned margin — nothing is cropped.
