The story of this map

This is the big picture: the entire Gulf coast of the United States on one chart, from Key West at the eastern end to the mouth of the Rio Grande at the western, published by the US Coast Survey in 1863. At 1:1,200,000 it is an overview rather than a harbor plan — the sheet a naval officer would spread out to plan a passage across the Gulf, not the one he would use to enter Galveston Bay.

That makes it a different kind of wall piece from our harbor charts. The long, low arc of the coast runs across the whole width — the Florida Keys, the Panhandle, the delta of the Mississippi, the barrier islands of Texas with Galveston among them — and the open water of the Gulf is left calm and clean. The lettering along the shore is the chief ornament. It reads as a map of a region as much as a chart.

The date is the middle of the Civil War, when the Union blockade of the Gulf ports made a good general chart of this coast a matter of real consequence. Its two sheets are joined in restoration into one continuous image.

It suits a Texas or Gulf Coast home, a long hallway, or an office that wants one wide, quiet print. Part of our Framed Nautical Charts collection; our 1864 Key West chart is its close-up companion. Printed to order on archival matte paper and framed in the country of delivery.

Restoration notes

Restoration plan: this chart is on two sheets of different sizes (76 x 52 cm and 75 x 77 cm) which must be aligned and stitched into one image, matching tone across the join; then crop scan margins, balance colour cast and levels while keeping the paper tone, remove library stamps and scanner artefacts if present, gentle sharpening. No repainting of original content.

Every print carries its archive credit on the packing slip. Paper tone and small imperfections of the original are kept on purpose; nothing is redrawn.

Sizes are the print size. Framed prints add about 1 in on each side. Sizes marked “aged-paper margin” keep the whole map and float it on a toned margin — nothing is cropped.
