The story of this poster

Chester Don Powell drew several of the Ranger Naturalist Service posters, and the Yellowstone sheet is the one most people know: Old Faithful going up in a white plume, the steam breaking into cloud at the top, against a sky printed as parallel bands of two blues. It was made in 1938 at the WPA Federal Art Project’s Western Museum Laboratories in Berkeley and screened by hand in a small edition for the park’s ranger stations.

The point of the poster was the programme lettered down its right side — nature walks, field trips, campfire programmes, nature talks — which the Park Service ran free of charge and wanted visitors to know about. The design language is the studio’s: a handful of flat inks, no halftones, block lettering cut from the same stencil alphabet as the other sheets, the Department of the Interior and the Park Service arrowhead in the bottom margin.

The Library of Congress copy shows its age at the edges and in a few creases, which we have left; the flat colour fields have been cleaned of dust and their balance restored without pushing the inks brighter than the original. A modern reprint of this image is easy to find. This is the 1938 impression itself, from the archive’s 300-dpi master.

Printed to order on archival matte paper, framed in the country of delivery, and offered only at sizes that fit the sheet exactly.

Restoration notes

Restoration: trimmed the mount board and scanner margins, balanced levels while keeping the silkscreen's flat inks and paper tone (90% of the original colour retained), removed dust and specks, and applied gentle sharpening. Creases, edge wear and registration slips of the original screen printing are kept where they belong to the object; nothing is redrawn.

Every print carries its archive credit on the packing slip. Paper tone and small imperfections of the original are kept on purpose; nothing is redrawn.

Sizes are the print size. Framed prints add about 1 in on each side. Sizes marked “aged-paper margin” keep the whole poster and float it on a toned margin — nothing is cropped.
