The story of this print

Red Fuji is the calmest sheet in Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji: the mountain turned red by early autumn sun, a sky of small clouds, nothing else. That simplicity is what lets it split in two. As a diptych the mountain spans both panels and the gap between them becomes part of the picture — a pair for either side of a bed, or two panels over a wide sofa.

Both panels are printed from the same Library of Congress scan as our single Red Fuji: 333 dpi at 12×16 in, 222 dpi at 18×24. The set is priced as two prints less 10%.

What we did to this scan

Balanced the levels and took out the scanner’s color cast, keeping 85% of the paper’s age tone.
Cleaned dust and specks picked up by the scanner.
A light sharpen, so fine lines and lettering hold at large sizes.

Questions

What exactly do I get?

Two separate prints that together make the whole of Red Fuji — the left panel with the title cartouche, the sky of small clouds and the forest at the mountain's foot; the right panel with the whole red summit and its snow. Choose 12×16 or 18×24 in panels, framed, on paper, or at 18×24 on stretched canvas.

How far apart should the pieces hang?

About 2 in (5 cm) between frames — a hand's width. That is the spacing the pictures on this page are drawn with, and it keeps the image reading as one across the gaps. Hang the middle of the group about 57–60 in from the floor.

How big is it on the wall?

Two 18×24 in panels with a 2-in gap cover about 38 × 24 in (framed, about 41 × 26 in); two 12×16 in panels about 26 × 16 in. The "All sizes" view draws it to scale.

Does the join cut through Fuji?

No. The whole summit sits in the right-hand panel; the join runs through the sky and the lower western slope where it meets the forest. We checked where it falls before offering the set. About 4% of the sheet's plain margin is trimmed so the panels are exact.

Is this an original woodblock print?

No. It is a new archival print made from the Library of Congress's high-resolution scan of an original Edo-period impression, printed as separate pieces. We never sell originals, and the archive record with its rights statement is on this page.

Colors vary between screens and paper. The tone you see here is a close match to the archival matte print; the previews are drawn without the reflection you would get from the acrylic front.
