The story of this print

The Great Wave was printed on a single sheet about 10 by 15 inches, and nobody who owned one in Edo hung it in three pieces. But a woodblock print is built for this: flat color, a strong horizontal, and an image that reads across the whole sheet from the claw of the wave on the left to the last boat on the right. Split into three tall panels with a hand’s width of wall between them, it becomes a piece for a long wall — over a sofa, a bed or a console — at a scale the single sheet can only reach by being blown up.

Each panel is printed from the same Library of Congress scan as our single Great Wave, at 222 dpi at 12×24 in, so the key-block line and the gradation of the Prussian blue hold at arm’s length. The set is priced as three prints less 10%.

What we did to this scan

Balanced the levels and took out the scanner’s color cast, keeping 85% of the paper’s age tone.
Cleaned dust and specks picked up by the scanner.
A light sharpen, so fine lines and lettering hold at large sizes.

Questions

What exactly do I get?

Three separate 12×24 in prints that together make the whole of the Great Wave: the title cartouche, the back of the great wave and the first boat on the left; the wave's clawed crest with Mount Fuji beneath it in the middle; the far boats and the slope of the next wave on the right. Framed sets arrive as three framed pieces, ready to hang.

How far apart should the pieces hang?

About 2 in (5 cm) between frames — a hand's width. That is the spacing the pictures on this page are drawn with, and it keeps the image reading as one across the gaps. Hang the middle of the group about 57–60 in from the floor.

How big is it on the wall?

Three 12×24 in prints with 2 in between them cover about 40 × 24 in; framed, each piece is about 13.6 × 25.6 in and the group about 45 × 26 in. The "All sizes" view on this page draws it to scale over an 84-in sofa.

Is anything cut off?

About 5% of the sheet's height — the plain paper margin at top and bottom — so the three panels are exactly 12×24 each. Nothing inside the picture is lost. The joins do cross the picture: the left one runs through the body of the great wave and the first boat, the right one through the far boats in the trough. With a 2-in gap the eye carries the lines across, which is how multi-panel sets are meant to read; if you would rather see the image whole, the single Great Wave print is the one to choose.

Is this an original woodblock print?

No. It is a new archival print made from the Library of Congress's high-resolution scan of an original Edo-period impression, printed as separate pieces. We never sell originals, and the archive record with its rights statement is on this page.

Colors vary between screens and paper. The tone you see here is a close match to the archival matte print; the previews are drawn without the reflection you would get from the acrylic front.
