The story of this print

Sudden Shower over Shin-Ōhashi Bridge is the print Van Gogh copied in oil in 1887: a bridge seen from above, figures running under a downpour drawn as hundreds of fine straight lines, and a dark rain cloud across the top. The sheet is tall — 0.67 wide for every 1 high — which means it divides into two panels of almost exactly 12 by 36 inches, a standard long frame, with less than one percent of the sheet trimmed.

As a pair it becomes the tall, narrow wall art that fills the walls a single print cannot: a stairwell, the strip beside a door, a narrow hallway. Each panel is printed at 200 dpi at 12×36 in from the same Library of Congress scan as our single print. The set is priced as two prints less 10%.

What we did to this scan

Squared off the scanner’s margins to the edge of the printed sheet.
Balanced the levels and took out the scanner’s color cast, keeping 85% of the paper’s age tone.
Cleaned dust and specks picked up by the scanner.
A light sharpen, so fine lines and lettering hold at large sizes.

Questions

What exactly do I get?

Two separate 12×36 in prints — tall, narrow panels — that together make the whole of Sudden Shower: the left panel carries the rafter poling his logs, the figures under a shared umbrella and Hiroshige's signature; the right carries the three running travelers, the bridge's pilings and the title cartouche. The join crosses the bridge between them. Framed, on paper, or on stretched canvas.

How far apart should the pieces hang?

About 2 in (5 cm) between frames — a hand's width. That is the spacing the pictures on this page are drawn with, and it keeps the image reading as one across the gaps. Hang the middle of the group about 57–60 in from the floor.

How big is it on the wall?

Two 12×36 in panels with a 2-in gap cover about 26 × 36 in; framed, about 29 × 38 in. They suit a narrow wall, a stairwell, either side of a doorway, or a pair over a console.

Why this print as long panels?

Hiroshige's print is already tall — the sheet is almost exactly two 1:3 strips side by side — so the split trims less than 1% and every panel is a standard 12×36 frame. The rain, drawn as long straight lines, runs the full height of both.

Is this an original woodblock print?

No. It is a new archival print made from the Library of Congress's high-resolution scan of an original Edo-period impression, printed as separate pieces. We never sell originals, and the archive record with its rights statement is on this page.

Colors vary between screens and paper. The tone you see here is a close match to the archival matte print; the previews are drawn without the reflection you would get from the acrylic front.
