Every finish is the same restored file at the same resolution: the finish changes what the print is mounted on, never the image.

The story of this print

In 1856 Hiroshige began the series that would be his last and largest: One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, the city that became Tokyo. The publisher arranged the prints by season, spring through winter, and all of them share one tall format. That makes the series unusually easy to hang as a group, because four prints from four seasons are already the same shape.

This set takes one print from each section. Spring is Nihonbashi on a clear morning after snow, with Mount Fuji beyond the warehouses. Summer is the carp streamers of Boys’ Day flying over Suidōbashi. Autumn is the moon over Edo Bay, seen from behind a screen at a party. Winter is the great lantern and gate of Kinryūzan Temple at Asakusa, deep in snow.

Each print is made from its own Library of Congress scan, in the same size and finish as the other three. At 12×18 in and 16×24 in all four fill their sheet exactly, so they hang as four identical shapes. The set is priced as four prints less 10%.

What we did to this scan

Balanced the levels and took out the scanner’s color cast, keeping 85% of the paper’s age tone.
Cleaned dust and specks picked up by the scanner.
A light sharpen, so fine lines and lettering hold at large sizes.

Questions

What exactly do I get?

Four separate prints, all the same size and finish: Nihonbashi: Clearing After Snow (spring), Suidōbashi Bridge and Surugadai with its carp streamers (summer), Moon-Viewing Point (autumn) and Kinryūzan Temple at Asakusa in snow (winter). They are four different pictures, not one picture cut into four, so each one can also hang on its own.

Why these four?

Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo is arranged by season. These are one print from each of its four sections, all the same tall format, so they hang as four identical shapes. Each is also sold on its own in our shop.

How big is it on the wall?

Hung in a row with 2 in (5 cm) between frames: four 12×18 in prints cover about 54 × 18 in (about 60 × 20 in framed), and four 16×24 in prints about 70 × 24 in (about 76 × 26 in framed). The 12×18 row suits a sofa or a sideboard; the 16×24 row wants a long wall. They also work as a 2×2 grid.

In what order should they hang?

Left to right in the order of the seasons: spring, summer, autumn, winter. That is the order they are shown in on this page — keep it for reference when you hang them.

Is this an original woodblock print?

No. Each is a new archival print made from the Library of Congress's high-resolution scan of an original impression. We never sell originals, and each print's own archive record is on its product page.

Colors vary between screens and paper. The tone you see here is a close match to the archival matte print; the previews are drawn without the reflection you would get from the acrylic front.
