Lake Tahoe Truckee Topographic Map, 1895

The story of this map

This 1895 Truckee sheet is one of the earliest US Geological Survey maps of the Tahoe country, drawn at 1:125,000 when the Survey was still working its way across the Sierra Nevada a quadrangle at a time. It covers the town of Truckee, Donner Lake and the pass above it, the Truckee River, and the northern and western shore of Lake Tahoe.

It is the contour work that makes it. The Sierra crest west of the lake is drawn in tight brown lines that loosen into the gentler basins around Truckee, and the blue of Tahoe’s north shore cuts across the lower part of the sheet. Donner Lake sits in its own small pocket of contours, with the pass that gave the emigrant trail its hardest miles just above it.

Anyone who has skied, hiked or summered around Tahoe will recognise the shapes and names. This is the landscape before the highways, drawn by surveyors on foot and horseback, and it carries the quiet authority of a working document rather than a souvenir.

Restoration plan: crop scan margins, balance colour cast and levels while keeping the paper tone, remove library stamps and scanner artefacts if present, gentle sharpening. No repainting of original content.

Every print carries its archive credit on the packing slip. Paper tone and small imperfections of the original are kept on purpose; nothing is redrawn.
