The story of this map

New York rarely gets treated as landscape, which is what makes this 1897 Harlem quadrangle such an unexpected pleasure. The US Geological Survey mapped the city the same way it mapped the Rockies, and here the hills of upper Manhattan and the Bronx appear in brown contour lines, with the Harlem, Hudson and East rivers in blue and the growing street grid laid over the top in black.

Look at the way the contours climb through Washington Heights and Inwood, and the way the Palisades on the Jersey side rise as a solid wall along the Hudson. The Bronx is still half countryside on this sheet, its villages and estates scattered among ridges and streams, while Harlem’s blocks march north in neat rows. The city’s rivers, bridges and rail lines give the map its skeleton.

This is New York at the moment of consolidation, drawn the year before the five boroughs became one city. For anyone who lives uptown or in the Bronx it is a genuine “your neighbourhood” map: the ground you walk on, before most of the buildings arrived.

We print it as a restored reproduction in our Framed Topographic Maps collection. It suits an apartment hallway, an office, or a wall beside our other New York maps. Printed to order on archival matte paper and framed in the country of delivery.

Sizes are the print size. Framed prints add about 1 in on each side. Sizes marked “aged-paper margin” keep the whole map and float it on a toned margin — nothing is cropped.
