The story of this map

Around 1914 the US Geological Survey published this panoramic view of Mount Rainier National Park, drawn by the Survey’s John H. Renshawe. Instead of the usual contour lines, Renshawe tilted the landscape and drew it as a bird would see it, so the whole park reads as one sculpted piece of ground with the mountain rising from the middle.

Rainier dominates the sheet. Its glaciers pour down every flank in white, the ridges and river valleys fan outward from the summit, and the lower forests fall away toward the edges in soft green and brown. Elevations are marked by spot heights, and the park’s rivers, valleys and named peaks are lettered in the neat Survey hand. It is a map that behaves like a painting.

The park had been established in 1899, and views like this were part of how the government introduced the new national parks to the public: not as abstract surveys but as places you could imagine walking into.

We print it as a restored reproduction in our Framed Topographic Maps collection. Its near-square format suits a landing, a mountain cabin, or a Pacific Northwest gallery wall beside a Puget Sound chart. Printed to order on archival matte paper and framed in the country of delivery.

Restoration notes

Restoration plan: crop scan margins, balance colour cast and levels while keeping the paper tone, remove library stamps and scanner artefacts if present, gentle sharpening. No repainting of original content.

Sizes are the print size. Framed prints add about 1 in on each side. Sizes marked “aged-paper margin” keep the whole map and float it on a toned margin — nothing is cropped.
