The story of this map

In 1889 the Milwaukee view-maker Henry Wellge drew Denver from an imaginary point high above the plains, and the American Publishing Company printed the result as a great wide lithograph. Denver was then a young boom city, barely thirty years old, and this perspective map catches it in the middle of its growth spurt.

Every street of the grid is drawn in, block by block, with the buildings shown individually so you can follow the tramlines and pick out churches, hotels and warehouses. The rail yards and the South Platte run along one side of the city, and behind it all the front range of the Rockies stretches across the horizon, giving the view the backdrop that makes Denver Denver. As the sheet itself admits, it is “not drawn to scale”, which is exactly its charm: it is a portrait of a city rather than a survey of one.

Bird’s-eye views like this were sold to civic boosters and proud residents, and they were meant to be hung. That is still their best use.

We print it as a restored reproduction and list it with our Framed Topographic Maps, alongside the mountain sheets it shares a state with. It suits a wide wall over a sofa or a sideboard, an office in downtown Denver, or a gift for a Coloradan. Printed to order on archival matte paper and framed in the country of delivery.

Restoration notes

Restoration plan: the Library of Congress copy is recorded as conserved; crop scan margins, balance colour cast and levels while keeping the paper tone, remove library stamps and scanner artefacts if present, gentle sharpening. No repainting of original content.

Every print carries its archive credit on the packing slip. Paper tone and small imperfections of the original are kept on purpose; nothing is redrawn.

Sizes are the print size. Framed prints add about 1 in on each side. Sizes marked “aged-paper margin” keep the whole map and float it on a toned margin — nothing is cropped.
