Japanese wall art, printed from the museum's own scan

The same Hokusai wave sells for ten dollars as a poster and five figures as an original impression. This is the honest middle: a new archival print made from the full-resolution scan a public museum publishes, restored by hand, printed at 200 dpi or better, and framed in solid wood — so the woodgrain in the key block and the gradation in Hiroshige's skies actually survive to your wall.

Why this and not a poster of the same picture

Three differences you can see at arm's length

The file is the whole argument

A poster shop prints a web-sized image enlarged until the linework dissolves. We start from the archive master — commonly 8,000 to 10,800 pixels on the long edge — so a 24 in print still carries the block's grain and the printer's bokashi shading.

Restored, not filtered

Foxing, tape shadows and scanner cast removed by hand; the paper tone, the pigment fade and the register left exactly as the impression has them. The before-and-after slider on each product page shows precisely what changed.

You know what you are buying

Every print names the artist, the year, the series and the institution whose scan it came from. No "inspired by", no anonymous reproduction, and no pretence that it is an antique.

Before you choose a size

See it on your own wall

Every product page can place the print in five to-scale rooms with an optional 5 ft 6 in figure beside it, or drop it onto a photograph of your own wall — the photo stays in your browser and never reaches us. The framed size is shown as well as the print size, so you know what actually hangs there. Size guide →

Questions

Is this an original Japanese woodblock print?

No, and we never describe it as one. Each is a new archival print made from the full-resolution scan a public museum or library publishes of an original impression. An original Hokusai from the 1830s is a five-figure object; this is a faithful, honestly labelled print of one, and the archive record for each is on its product page.

How is this different from a cheap poster of the same image?

The file. A poster site prints a small web image blown up; we start from the archive master, often 8,000 to 10,800 pixels wide, restore it by hand and print at 200 dpi or better at every size we offer. At 24 inches you can see the woodgrain in the key block and the gradation in the sky — the things that make a woodblock print worth hanging.

What paper, and is it framed?

Archival matte paper with pigment inks. You can have it rolled in a tube, stretched on canvas, or framed in solid wood — black, natural oak or white — with a 2 in white mat, a clear acrylic front and the hanging hardware already fitted. Framed pieces arrive ready to hang.

Which artists do you carry?

Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige, Kitagawa Utamaro, Yoshida Hiroshi, Utagawa Kuniyoshi — including the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series, Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, and Yoshida's twentieth-century landscapes.

How long does it take?

Each print is made to order in 2–4 business days and shipped from a facility in or near your country. US orders over $75 ship free.

What if it arrives damaged?

The claim form gets a free replacement printed within 30 days of delivery — one photo, nothing to send back.
